Bright Tide and the National Oceanography Centre present to the APPG on Blue Carbon Finance

The APPG for the Ocean was delighted to welcome Harry Wright, CEO and Co-Founder of Bright Tide sustainability consultancy and Dr Claire Evans, Research Fellow in Ocean BioGeosciences at the National Oceanography Centre, to present on blue carbon finance in ocean and marine ecosystems. We were pleased to also be joined by a number of other leading stakeholders including Blue Marine Foundation, Rewilding Britain, Muzinich & Co and Standard Deviation.

Blue carbon habitats are essential nature-based solutions in tackling climate change, playing an important role in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and enhancing resilience of ecosystems against climate hazards such as flooding and sea-rise levels. In particular, vegetated coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, saltmarshes, and seagrasses are among the Earth’s most efficient carbon sinks. However, these are some of the most threatened and degraded habitats on Earth. Funding for projects to restore and maintain our blue carbon habits is therefore a vital part of climate mitigation. However, while capital to support blue carbon projects is available, there are significant financing gaps that make the funding of such projects slow and difficult.

Many thanks to all who attended and for the interesting discussion on the global potential and limits of blue carbon financing and what Government can do to support both UK-based and international blue carbon projects.
