Greenpeace present to APPG at virtual briefing on the ‘UN Global Ocean Treaty’

The APPG for the Ocean was delighted to welcome representatives of Greenpeace, Meg Randles, UK Political Campaigner and Chris Thorne, Protect the Oceans Lead Campaigner, to present at the APPG’s private briefing session ahead of what is expected to be the final round of UN negotiations to secure a Global Ocean Treaty.

In February 2023, governments will resume the fifth and last round of negotiations, after previous talks collapsed, to finalise a landmark Global Ocean Treaty that can protect half of the planet. This UN treaty can deliver the transformative change needed to address the climate and biodiversity crises - but time is running out and finalising these negotiations requires urgent ministerial intervention. The UK has a significant role to play in holding the line on ambition and securing a meaningful and equitable Treaty.

Many thanks to all who attended and for the interesting discussion on the importance of ensuring that the ocean is included in all global climate policy making.
