APPG for the Ocean partners with Coastal Communities APPG for parliamentary briefing on Ocean Literacy

The APPG for the Ocean was pleased to partner with the Coastal Communities APPG and experts from across the UK to discuss ocean literacy. The online parliamentary briefing provided a summary of the findings of the recently published Ocean Literacy Survey.

Ocean literacy is an understanding of the ocean's influence on us and our impact on it. Increasing ocean literacy is part of our collective mission to raise awareness and educate people about the vitality of our oceans and the need to protect them.

The survey found that over 80% of people in England, Scotland, and Wales believe that it is essential to protect our seas. However, the survey also revealed that many people lack knowledge about the significant changes impacting the ocean. Understanding the cultural, economic, and social importance of the sea to our communities involves knowing how our actions affect the ocean environment and how we can contribute to its protection. Many thanks to the featured speakers from Defra, Marine Scotland, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru/Natural Resources Wales, and Cardiff University.

We want to thank the Chair of both the APPG for the Ocean and the Coastal Communities APPG, Sally-Ann Hart MP, for her continued support for ocean issues.

Many thanks to all who attended and are invested in improving ocean literacy in our society. Together, we can all work towards policies that protect our seas for generations to come.
