APPG for the Ocean Chair Sally-Ann Hart MP leads parliamentary debate on World Ocean Day

On World Ocean Day 2023, 8th June 2023, APPG for the Ocean Chair Sally-Ann Hart MP led a parliamentary debate in Westminster Hall to celebrate the event, highlight the need to promote ocean research and awareness and to discuss the significant benefits of the ocean and the need to protect it.

On the 31st anniversary of World Ocean Day, the debate marked an opportunity to highlight and support the implementation of worldwide sustainable development goals and to foster public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.

Issues covered in the debate included biodiversity, blue carbon solutions and the need to protect coastal communities and marine life. The debate also highlighted the APPG’s first inquiry into blue carbon and ocean-based solutions to climate change, The Ocean: Turning the Tide on Climate Change, as three of our eight recommendations were echoed in the Government’s recent environment improvement plan.
